I’m always on the hunt for ways to quiet my brain—no small task when your mind runs like it’s double-booked and over-caffeinated. Over the years, I’ve tried hundreds of tricks. Some were helpful. Some were disasters. Most landed somewhere in the middle—like tuning into certain music frequencies or finding stims that are both effective and won’t get you banned from polite society. (Yes, I can drive people bonkers with pen tapping. And yes, I have.)

So imagine my surprise when someone casually dropped a trick so simple it felt like cheating. When your thoughts are NASCARing around the mental track at 200 mph, try this: just say or think, “I wonder what my next thought will be.”

Boom. Silence.

I don’t know why it works. I don’t know how long it lasts. But for a moment—sometimes a glorious few seconds—my brain goes blank. No thoughts. No noise. Just… peace.

So this is what they mean by “the sound of silence”? I could get used to this. Maybe even make it a hobby.
