One of the true joys of life in North Carolina is the sheer stampede of free music concerts that invade the calendar from May through September. Spring, for us, isn’t just about blooming flowers or longer days—it’s when we perform our sacred seasonal ritual: furiously scouring the websites of every small town within a two-hour drive of the ridge. Picture two people hunched over laptops like codebreakers, muttering things like, “Does this festival have food trucks?” and “Wait—is that real Motown or just ‘Motown-ish’?”
Excitement builds as we start adding dates and locations to our phones with the precision of a NASA launch schedule. We cheer as the tally passes thirty… forty… fifty events. At this point, even our phones are asking, “Are you sure you’re going to all these?”
We’re always delighted by the musical variety—from ‘70s cover bands to soulful blues to tribute acts with suspiciously creative names. We’ve even become repeat fans of a few groups. Can you imagine being groupies at our age? LOL. Picture us in folding chairs with foam cushions, holding up signs that say, “We heart your knee replacements!”
April showers may bring May flowers, but up on the ridge, they bring a full-blown summer soundtrack—and we are here for it. Cue the air guitar and unsupervised dance moves. YEEHAW!
