So there I was, just casually minding my own business—doing what any wild, spontaneous grown-up does for fun: looking up words in the dictionary. You can keep your TikToks and dance challenges—I like to pretend I’m still on the noble path of self-education. (Fake it ’til you make it, right?)
Anyway, I’ve had this habit since I was a kid—I look up at least ten words a day. Sometimes they’re new, sometimes it’s just me discovering that a word I thought I knew has been holding out on me.
Today’s surprise? Disgruntled has an opposite. A real one. And it’s not just “not disgruntled.” No. It’s gruntled!
Yes. Gruntled. As in, “pleased, satisfied, and contented.” And now I can’t stop imagining it in regional dialects:
- British: “Oh, I was ever so gruntled with the outcome, darling. Positively chuffed, I was.”
- Southern: “Sugar, that pecan pie had me more gruntled than a pig in sunshine.”
- California: “Dude. This chai oat milk latte has me fully gruntled.”
How is this not in daily use? Why aren’t we all striving to live our most gruntled lives?
Well, starting today—I am. Join me. Be gruntled. Stay gruntled. Spread the gruntle.
